In a rare West Coast appearance, Richie Beirach visits the Jazzschool for an afternoon of inspiration and education. As one of the most important pianists in the jazz idiom, Richie is both a leader, with his trio with George Mraz and Billy Hart, and has been an essential sideman with jazz icons such as Stan Getz and Chet Baker. Currently the piano professor at Felix Mendelssohn University in Leipzig, Germany, Beirach has taught many of today’s top jazz players including Joey Calderazzo, Fred Hersch, and Michael and Randy Brecker. His work with Dave Liebman, John Abercrombie, Lee Konitz and Randy Brecker has produced scores of recordings.
As a composer, his songs “Elm,” “Broken Wing,” and “Leaving” are permanent fixtures in the modern jazz repertoire. His humor and intellect make his live appearances and teaching engagements wonderfully memorable. Having not performed on the West Coast since his “Live at Maybeck Hall” recording in 1992, this is a rare opportunity for students of all levels to meet and learn from a jazz master.
Non-pianists are encouraged to perform with Richie and pianists are asked to prepare solo pieces for critique. Please bring two to three songs to choose from for the class. Composers are welcome to bring original material. Maximum enrollment: 10 participants. Open to all intermediate to advanced instrumentalists and vocalists
